From gypsum to plaster in Haute-Provence

Students in the Art History option at Sisteron’s Lycée Paul Arène took part in a “Heritage” project led by Leslie Masson from Sisteron town council’s heritage department.

The aim of this project is to raise pupils’ awareness of the heritage of gypseries, which can be admired at the Sisteron Auditorium, Volonne castle…

Gypsum was used extensively in the area, with quarries, plaster kilns and traces of gypsum used in the construction of houses.

A Geopark mediator took a geological approach, explaining how it is formed, the different types of gypsum and how man has used this resource.

Fossil of the year

Pupils in the CM1/CM2 class at Gaubert school (re)discovered the fossils of our region.
Two in-class workshops were offered. Students were introduced to the diversity of the Haute-Provence Geopark’s heritage. They discovered a famous personality such as paleontologist Mary Anning… They observed local fossils…
The students have become true ambassadors of the local heritage.
The project was finalized with the creation of “Fossil of the Month” drawings. The winning entry was sent to the competition launched by the European Geoparks Network (EGN) to mark International Geodiversity Day.
