Site and route development

Projects to develop sites and itineraries to enhance the Geopark’s heritage.

A lookout point at Bois Noir

Perched at 1340m above sea level on a natural promontory, this viewpoint offers spectacular 360° views over the Turriers basin, the southern Pre-Alps and the Écrins massif.

This new site, located in the very north of the Haute-Provence Geopark territory, completes the network of developed sites along the Hautes-Terres thematic route, which from Sisteron offers visitors a chance to discover unspoilt nature and striking landscapes of varied rock formations, the result of 200 million years of geological history.

Features include a masonry platform, two interpretation desks and sighting tubes pointing to the main peaks visible in the landscape.

The work was carried out by Volonne-based Terra Environnement between summer 2024 and summer 2025. The project was coordinated by the Haute-Provence Geopark team, under the aegis of a dedicated steering committee involving the Communauté de communes du Sisteronais-Buëch, Provence Alpes Agglomération, the commune of Turriers and the Loques family, who own the land.

This project was carried out by the Sisteronais-Buëch Community of Municipalities, with financial support from the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region and the French government as part of the Espace Valléen 2021-2027 program.

Project financed under the Espace Valléen program by the French government and the Southern Region.

The soft link between Dalle aux ammonites and the Promenade Museum

Listed as one of the 100 most beautiful geological sites in the world, the Dalle aux ammonites will soon be linked to the Promenade Museum by a soft link, allowing pedestrians, cyclists, families and people with reduced mobility to move freely and safely between these two major sites.

This project involves various works:

  • The development and securing of cycle and pedestrian paths of the greenway type over a distance of around 1km;
  • Landscaping and planting of the surrounding area. As far as possible, the path will be laid out in a natural area, away from road nuisances. It will follow the contours of the land as closely as possible to minimize earthworks. Landscape integration work will also be carried out (planting, vegetated berms, etc.) in areas close to the road;
  • The installation of directional and safety signage. Wooden bollards will be placed at the start and end of the soft link, as well as at strategic points to demarcate it and prevent motor vehicles such as quad bikes from entering. Horizontal and vertical signage will help users find their way around;
  • Development of an interpretation area to showcase the Champourcin lime kilns.

Work began this autumn and will be completed in early 2024.

Digne-sentier-de-Caguerenard

Improving the Caguerenard trail

Linking Digne-les-Bains town center to the Musée Promenade, before continuing along the sentier de la Platrière to the Dalle aux ammonites, the sentier de Caguerenard offers lovely views of Digne-les-Bains, the Bléone and the surrounding mountains. Particularly popular with the locals for family outings, this 5 km, 1.5-hour trail was used by over 20,000 people in 2021.

Since autumn 2023, it has been undergoing major upgrades, including:

  • Rehabilitation and restoration of the path to prevent and compensate for soil erosion;
  • Securing the cliffs;
  • Installation of interpretation equipment and rest furniture.

The aim is to provide a well-developed pedestrian link between these three landmark sites, accessible to all, with signposts and information points highlighting the area’s rich biodiversity and landscapes. The renovation also includes the creation of landscape-reading tables, offering privileged views over the town of Digne-les-Bains and the surrounding peaks. Created in steel, the trail’s signage adorns the various interpretation points.
