Tourist promotion of art in nature

A LEADER cooperation project to enhance the tourism value of the UNESCO Geoparks in Haute-Provence and Monts d’Ardèche.

Operation carried out by Provence Alpes Agglomération with financial support from the European Union, Région Sud and Département des Alpes-de-Haute-Provence as part of the LEADER program (GAL Dignois).

Both with the international “UNESCO Geopark” label and exceptional collections of contemporary works of art in the heart of nature, the Haute-Provence and Monts d’Ardèche territories have decided in 2021 to work together on a global cooperation project with the aim of:

  • To strengthen synergies between the two regions in terms of structuring and promoting art in nature as a tourist attraction, through exchanges of experience and the definition of shared objectives;

  • Develop a joint tourism promotion strategy to raise the profile and visibility of our offer on a national and international scale, particularly within the global network of UNESCO-labeled Geoparks;

  • Generate more local economic spin-offs by marketing combined stays and day-drive experiences tailored to customer demand and itineraries (accommodation, catering, activities).

  • Enhance the skills of those involved in tourism, and in particular those who provide support and mediation services for the local and tourist public.

Four partners are involved in this partnership between the two regions: the Parc naturel régional des Monts d’Ardèche, which manages the Monts d’Ardèche Geopark, Provence Alpes Agglomération, which manages the Haute Provence Geopark, the commune of Digne-les-Bains (which manages the Musée Gassendi, owner of the mountain art collections) and the Provence Alpes Digne-les-Bains tourist office. Depending on their skills, each partner has carried out specific actions within the overall project:

  • Qualification of players (study tours, eductours, training),
  • Definition of a tourism development strategy,
  • Content production (photo/video),
  • Production of communication tools (leaflets, topo-guides, catalog).
