The Austrian Pine (Or Black Pine) Tree

The Austrian Pine (or Black Pine) is one of the most widespread tree species in the Haute-Provence Geopark. It is not a native species. The black pine was introduced into the Southern Alps in the second half of the 19th century to reforest exposed and eroded land.

Austrian Pine

Grows to 25-35m high, strong lateral branches, deeply fissured blackish bark, medium length needles (8-14cm) which are rigid, prickly, almost perpendicular to the branch.
