This lime kiln is located on a road leading from the village of Bras d’Asse to the hamlet of Les Oraisonis. Its shape and size make it a remarkable piece of heritage.
Until the industrial revolution, almost every village had at least one lime or plaster kiln. The commune of Bras d’Asse alone had seven.
This kiln is a rich testimony to the skills of yesteryear. Its date of construction is unknown, but it is quite neat; it may date from the time when the village moved down from the heights of Vieux Bras to the present-day Bras d’Asse on the plain (from 1850).
Limestone is very abundant locally, particularly in the pebbles of the Valensole formation into which the Asse valley is carved. Highly heated, it becomes quicklime.
