Fountain of Gigors

About

Gigors is one of the villages of the Hautes Terres de Provence. Its fountain and plaster mill are precious reminders of life in days gone by.

Between two hikes, or as a stopover on the Haute-Provence Geopark discovery route, don’t hesitate to stop off in the charming village of Gigors. The village was once a Carolingian villa donated to the Abbey of Saint-Victor de Marseille (8th c.). In the center of the village, there used to be a kiln and a plaster mill, whose millstone you can see on the square. It’s remarkable in that, dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it was made using a Roman technique and an antique model! This millstone is thus a unique testimony, almost an anachronism, in the whole Mediterranean area. As for the fountain in the village below the road, it’s astonishing with its four successive basins. According to oral tradition, the population bought it from the local lord by paying the equivalent weight in wheat!
