La Chapelle Saint-Christol

About

This beautiful chapel dates back to the 11th century. Dedicated to Saint-Christophe, patron saint of travelers, it makes a pleasant stopover on the Route Napoléon between Digne-les-Bains and Malijai.

Built on the ruins of an ancient Gallo-Roman villa, the chapel belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille. Originally vaulted, it was badly damaged by time, looters and the Wars of Religion. Completely renovated in 2009, it is located on the territory of the former commune of Beauvezet, now part of Mirabeau.
You can admire the entire building and read the time on the sundial on the south façade. The so-called “cholera obelisk” was erected by Joseph Latil, vice-president of the Court of Digne, in memory of his wife, brother and father, who died during the epidemic of 1832-1838.
Every year, on Ascension Day, the parish priest of Malijai conducts a ceremony here, at the end of which he blesses all vehicles in honor of Saint-Christophe.
