La Chapelle Saint-Jean

About

The Saint-Jean chapel marks the original site of the village of Saint-Jeannet, in the Asse valley. Its fine architecture bears witness to the persistence of Romanesque art in Haute-Provence.

Among the remarkable architectural features of the Haute-Provence Geopark are the many Romanesque buildings that mark the area. You’ll find large churches and numerous chapels, such as this one, once the village parish church.
Its single nave ends in a flat chevet adorned with a three-lobed niche. The chancel is covered by a six-pointed ribbed cross, while the nave has a rib-vaulted bay and a barrel-vaulted half-bay. The capitals are decorated with plant motifs, lions’ heads and human faces.
In ruins in 1828, it was restored. The latest restoration work, carried out in 1985, has restored the church to some of its former magnificence. It is now listed as a Monument Historique.
