Our Lady of the Rosary

About

Built on a hill overlooking the village of Mézel and the Asse valley, this chapel is a pleasant place to walk around. Its old single-needle clock is clearly visible from the village.

Notre-Dame du Rosaire (17th c.) is the former parish church of the original village of Mézel, of which a few fragments of the ramparts remain. It was probably built on the foundations of the existing castle chapel. The Tuscan-style portal dates from 1680 and is sheltered by a wide porch. The flat chevet is pierced by an oculus, framed by a rosary held by two angels crowning the large gypsum altarpiece, the chapel’s most remarkable feature. In the 18th century, the ensemble was completed by a hermitage used as a hospital, razed to the ground in the 19th century.
Continue your tour of the village streets and admire the many old doors and specific architecture under the roofs, the plum dryers. In the 19th century, the village produced the famous Pistoles that made the valley and the Dignois region famous.
