The village of Turriers stretches out at an altitude of 1040 m, on a mound overlooking a vast glacial basin and offering a breathtaking panorama of Haute-Provence, all the way to the Alps.
Surrounded by hills, Turriers offers panoramic views as far as the Champsaur and Ecrins mountains, reminding us that these highlands look towards the Alps as much as Provence. The village lies at the center of a vast depression carved out of the soft Jurassic levels.
During the last two glacial periods (15,000 years ago), two glaciers, one following the present-day Durance valley and the other the Ubaye valley, joined to overflow southwards, filling the Turriers basin. Numerous landscape features bear witness to this glacial past: erratic boulders transported far from their origin, rocks striated by the movement of ice, flat-bottomed glacial valleys like the Grand Vallon, glacial troughs like the Col des Sagnes, moraines along the Blanche valley.
