The pineapple oak is one of the remarkable trees listed by the Haute-Provence Geopark. Don’t hesitate to stop and admire it from the roadside!
Observing trees is an exercise to be practised regularly, inviting us to enjoy the nature that surrounds us, to take lessons in longevity, greatness and often resilience from it.
This oak grows alongside the departmental road, which itself follows the line of a Roman road. It is a Quercus pubescens or white oak. It is remarkable for the kind of tumor – called a broussin or burr – it has developed at the base of its trunk; this reaction is generally caused by an obstacle to the circulation of sap or by the action of a virus.
This tree is included in the inventory produced by the Geopark of Haute Provence. Nearly 250 remarkable trees have been identified, ten of which are of regional interest. This oak is located on a private property. A few kilometers away, still in the commune of Saint-Jeannet, is another remarkable tree: the Pierre d’Arc oak.
