This geological site is located on the Route des Hautes Terres, one of the discovery routes of the Haute-Provence Geopark, in the heart of the Land of the Memory of the Earth.
The Haute-Provence Geopark boasts landscapes and geological curiosities that fascinate geologists, but also delight, astonish and interest a growing number of visitors. Such is the case of the Reynier slumps.
The limestone outcrops on the cliffs were deposited on the seabed 140 million years ago. The geometry of the layers illustrates the instability of the seabed at the end of the Jurassic. Folded, contorted and fragmented layers can be seen between two more regular units. This type of pattern is characteristic of sliding sediment banks that are still plastic and not fully transformed into rock. This suggests the existence of slopes and therefore of a submarine relief at this time. Several levels of slumps can be seen superimposed, demonstrating the repetition of the phenomenon over time.
