A landmark in the Duyes Valley, Thoard’s bell tower-dungeon soars into the Haute-Provence sky, testifying to its rich history.
The hilltop village of Thoard is a must-see on the Route du Temps of the Haute Provence Geopark. With its recognizable bell tower-dungeon, it stands at the bottom of a valley that has preserved its identity. Here you’ll discover a remarkable natural heritage, agricultural and rural landscapes, and a wealth of architectural and cultural features: castles and stately homes, churches, fountains, gypseries, etc.
This tower was probably the keep in the 12th or 13th century. The parish church was then added, and the thick wall was pierced to allow communication between the two buildings. The bell tower was added in the 17th c.
Don’t miss the feast of Saint Blaise, which is still very much alive in Thoard: 4 days of festivities in February, culminating in an aioli and the symbolic burial of Saint Blaise at the end of a colorful ceremony!
