Almost a hundred years old, this canal is a haven of freshness and well-being. It is indispensable to local agriculture and much appreciated by walkers and hikers.
Since its commissioning, the Canal de Manosque has revolutionized agriculture in the 13 communes it crosses on the right bank of the Durance, between Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban and Corbières-en-Provence. It’s also a jewel of our industrial heritage, if we consider the superb 19th-century engineering structures that dot its route.
Although the canal project dates back to 1861, construction only began in 1881 and was completed in 1926. The canal is managed by the Association Syndicale du Canal de Manosque (ASCM). The mission of this local public body is to operate, maintain and modernize the raw water supply works. Since 2009, a canal contract has enabled modernization to be undertaken, particularly in the context of global warming, to limit the flow transported.
