The Nibles altarpiece

About

The small village of Nibles nestles on the banks of the Sasse, a tributary of the Durance, in the heart of the Hautes Terres de Provence. Its church, N.-D. de Bethléem, conceals unsuspected treasures.

With its natural setting, its bell tower-wall that stands out against the blue sky of Haute-Provence, and the landscaping of its forecourt, the church of Nibles will charm you immediately. Dedicated to the Nativity, it was built in 1717, succeeding two earlier churches, one of which (11th c.) belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Victor and the other (12th c.) had been built near the castle.
The interior contains several items of furniture listed as Monuments Historiques. The wooden altarpiece on the high altar, with no gilding, is remarkable for its size and quality. Other listed items include a painted wooden tabernacle (17th c.), a large copper crucifix (18th c.), a statue of St. Joseph and a painting of the Holy Family, in which St. John the Baptist recalls that the local inhabitants used the ruins of a chapel to build their church.
