The Saint-Vincent cave is a natural cavity some thirty meters deep, located in the commune of Castellard-Mélan in the Monges massif.

With its main chamber, stalactites and basins, the Grotte Saint-Vincent opens onto the unknown of the underground world. It was formed by the dissolution of Jurassic limestone by carbon dioxide-laden water seeping into the massif. Although this cave is less of a mystery to geologists today, it was long explained by a fantastic legend. But the Devil, exasperated by this saintly healer and propagator of the Christian faith, decided to lock him up in the cave to starve him to death. Saint Vincent overcame the devil and turned him into a stone serpent. Legend has it that he even left the imprint of his foot in the ground…
