Villages & Cités de Caractère Seyne les Alpes

About

At an altitude of 1260 m, Seyne is a city of character, with a rich architectural heritage and an exceptional natural environment. Winter and summer alike, Seyne is a popular vacation resort.

The town, crowned by its fort and “grande Tour”, reveals its narrow streets and squares, with authentic village houses, some of them half-timbered, ancient gateways and numerous elements of medieval architecture. Its 13th-century church, Notre-Dame de Nazareth, is a remarkable example of Romanesque art in the Southern Alps.
The history of Seyne and the region goes back to antiquity, and probably much further. Once the chief town of the Edenates tribe, Sedena was conquered by the Romans, then expanded during the Middle Ages. During the Wars of Religion, it became one of the places of safety granted to Protestants. A border town until 1713, it was fortified by Vauban.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Seyne became a leading mulass center. The Mule House, in the heart of an agricultural estate, reveals the importance of this animal during the centuries in the mountains.
