About

Through an artistic installation on the surface of these rocks, herman de vries opens a window onto the past and the invisible, giving us access to a series of geological formations.

herman de vries* first came to Digne-les-Bains in 1999 at the invitation of CAIRN center d’art. Since then, he has returned regularly, creating artworks at the Musée Gassendi and outdoors. His Fenêtres open onto the alpine sea of the Secondaire: from the top of the Fontarasse ravine, the first two windows plunge us into the Triassic and the next into the Lower Jurassic (Lias).
“When we drive through the Geological Reserve (or Geopark), we usually see grey rocks, mountains and formations. The contents of this massive archive of the past, however, remain largely inaccessible. The small windows opened in a series of geological formations in the form of well-polished rock surfaces give us a small glimpse of the richness contained in these massifs and of a cosmic space. I make visible.” herman de vries
