GEORANDOS 2025

The Geopark offers 10 hikes to discover the region’s geology, accompanied by passionate mountain guides.

Discover the emblematic landscapes of the Haute-Provence UNESCO World Geopark. Take a day trip back in time, on the lookout for clues that will enable you to reconstruct the marine life of yesteryear, or experience the formation of life-size mountains, while observing wild flora and fauna.

Registration with Musée Promenade: 04 92 36 70 70. The meeting point is at the start of the hike. Carpooling is recommended.

Group size limited to 15 people
Price: €10/person, free for children under 14

Recommended equipment: walking shoes, sun protection (sunglasses, sun cream, hat, etc.), rucksack, water (min. 1.5L), picnic, snacks, walking stick (recommended).

La Dalle aux ammonites by Caguerenard

With over 1,500 ammonite fossils grouped together on a 320 m² surface, the ammonite slab is without doubt the emblematic site of the Haute-Provence UNESCO World Geopark.

Sunset over the Pénitents des Mées

Thursday, July 3 and Monday, August 18

The village of Les Mées is famous for its impressive rock pillars, some one hundred meters high. Lined up for over two kilometers along the Durance valley, they can be spotted from afar. Come and see them up close!

Le Vieil Esclangon

Wednesday, July 9 and Friday, August 8

In the heart of the Bès valley, the famous Vélodrome winds its way through an impressive landscape. It’s as you climb up to Vieil Esclangon that it gradually reveals itself, with its rocks rising skywards. When you think that they were born at the bottom of the sea less than 20 million years ago, what a long way we’ve come!

The Melaie Ichthyosaurus

Wednesday, July 16

Nestled in an austere landscape of dark marl, in the heart of the Haute-Provence Geopark, this 4m-long fossil marine reptile, 107 million years old, lived at the time of the dinosaurs. It bears witness to a time when water covered our region, before the Alps even existed.

The Gâche ridge

Wednesday, July 21: from the sea to the mountains around Saint-Geniez

Geological hike around Saint-Geniez, at the gateway to the Monges massif, to discover the great history of the Earth (the main geological eras that have left their mark on the local environment). The objective? The immense Gâche ridge, dominating the valley. Along the way, astonishing geological shapes: perched synclines, clues, thrust sheets and erosion marks on the limestone.

Dormillouse

Monday, August 11 and Monday, August 25 : Dormillouse

Built in 1862, the Dormillouse fortress offers a breathtaking view of the Ubaye Valley on one side, the Vallée de la Blanche on the other and the Lac de Serre-Ponçon at its feet. To reach its 2505m altitude, you’ll have to cross millions of years of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene seas… What better way to discover the region!

Hiking time: 7h – Difference in altitude: 750 m – Level: difficult – from 8 years old
