The oldest mention of the village of Estoublon dates back to the 6th century in The Ecclesiastical History of the Franks by Grégoire de Tours. It records the invasion of the Lombards with the help of Saxons from Italy into the lands of Gontran, grandson of Clovis, King of Burgundy.
The invaders, who had already plundered the Embrun region in 570, set up their camp near Estoublon (Apud Stablonem Villam).
The Patrician Mummole (the highest dignitary after the king), who had already fended them off during the previous invasion, attacked them by surprise and killed many of them.
There is no archaeological evidence and therefore no agreement on the precise location of the battle or the Saxon camp.
However, archaeological remains attest to a settlement at the site at Estoublon, which from the Classical Antiquity period onwards was widespread along the route of the Roman road between Riez and Digne.
